Sailplane setups now available for Horus

After a number of RF firmware updates, FrSky's flagship transmitter is finally starting to fulfill the high expectations of FrSky fans. I think we can expect to see many more Horus's appearing on the field/slope shortly, and it'll get a further boost when OpenTx 2.2 is officially released. In anticipation of this I've ported over my F3F, F3JE-Soar and E-Soar Plus templates to the new transmitter.

Using OpenTx to help manage LiFe rx batteries

Until now, I've always used Eneloop NiMH cells for my F3F models, and I've found them to be very reliable. However my new Needle 115 forced a change in habit, as I equipped it with HV servos for which Lithium batteries are better suited.

After some thought, I settled on a Vapex 1600 2S LiFe pack. These cells are less prone to catch fire than LiPo's, and this particular pack fits well in the Needle.

Migrating setups from Taranis X9D to X9E

The Taranis X9E contains a superset of the X9D's controls, and in theory any setup designed for the X9D will also run on the X9E. In practice, setups which use LS or RS will need modification.

In this post I'll explain the background, and the fix. Or you can jump straight to 'Fix'.

EU, non-EU/World and EU-LBT - module firmware demystified

[last updated 9 April 2017]

The latest ETSI directive EN 300 328 V1.8.1 has, I think it's fair to say, caused a certain amount of confusion amongst Taranis users. Many pilots are unsure whether they should upgrade their firmware, or how to do so. FrSky's fumbling firmware releases haven't helped matters, either.

The purpose of this post is to try and shed some light, and to answer common questions such as:
